Lesson 21 - Pie Chart in Power BI Desktop

A Pie chart in Power BI is a circular visual used to show how different categories contribute to a whole. Each slice represents a category, and the size of the slice shows its proportion of the total.

Pie charts are useful for displaying part-to-whole relationships and are most effective when the data contains a small number of categories.

How to proceed?

Step 1 Import the Data

Launch Power BI Desktop, create a new report page, and import the required data.

Step 2 Add a Pie Chart

From the Visualizations pane, select the Pie chart visual.

Step 3 Add Fields to the Pie Chart

Add the required fields to the appropriate field wells in the Build visual pane:

Legend – Season
Values – Number of Sports

The Legend field separates the Pie chart into different categories.

The Values field determines the size of each slice based on the numerical value.

In this example, the Pie chart displays the distribution of sports by season.

Step 4 Customize the Pie Chart

You can customize the appearance of the Pie chart using the Format visual pane. You can modify settings such as the title, legend, slices, detail labels, rotation, colors, background, and other visual properties.

Select the Pie chart and use the available options in the Format visual pane to customize the visual.

Customize the Legend

The legend helps identify the categories displayed in the Pie chart.

You can customize the legend position, font size, style, and color using the available settings in the Format visual pane. You can also turn off the legend if the detail labels already provide sufficient category information.

In this example, the legend is positioned at the Top right stacked position.

Customize the Slices

Each slice of a Pie chart represents a category and its contribution to the total.

You can customize the color of each slice using the available color settings in the Format visual pane.

Customize Detail Labels

Detail labels display additional information about the categories represented in the Pie chart.

Depending on the available settings, labels can display category information, values, or percentages. Avoid displaying too many labels because they can make the visual difficult to read.

Adjust the Rotation

The Rotation setting changes the starting position of the Pie chart slices.

Adjusting the rotation can help improve the visual arrangement and emphasize specific categories.

Step 5 Save the Visual

Finally, your Pie chart is ready. Save the Power BI report to preserve the visual and its formatting.

When to use Pie chart?

Pie charts are useful when you want to show how different categories contribute to a whole.

They are most effective when you have a small number of clear categories and want to compare the proportion of each category to the total.

Pros

  • Provides an easy-to-understand representation of parts of a whole.
  • Helps communicate the proportion or percentage contribution of each category.
  • Works well with a small number of categories.
  • Provides a simple visual summary of category composition.

Cons

  • A large number of categories can make the chart difficult to read.
  • Similar-sized slices can be difficult to compare.
  • Comparing multiple Pie charts can be challenging because slice angles and proportions vary.
  • Too many detail labels can overcrowd the visual.

Conclusion

Pie charts are useful for showing how individual categories contribute to a whole. Each slice represents a category and its proportion of the total, providing a simple way to understand part-to-whole relationships.

Pie charts are most effective when used with a limited number of categories. Selecting appropriate data, labels, and formatting options helps create a clear and easy-to-understand visual.
