Lesson 9 - Multirow card Visual in Power BI Desktop

In recent versions of Power BI Desktop, Microsoft recommends using the Card visual for new reports because it supports both single-value and multi-value layouts. However, the classic Multi-row Card visual is still available and can be restored if it doesn't appear in the Visualizations pane. This lesson demonstrates how to create and customize the classic Multi-row Card visual.

How to Proceed?

Step 1

Launch Power BI Desktop, create a new report, and import the required dataset.

Step 2

In recent versions of Power BI Desktop, the Multi-row Card visual may not appear in the Visualizations pane by default because Microsoft recommends using the modern Card visual for new reports.

If the Multi-row Card visual is not available:

  • Click More visuals (...) in the Visualizations pane.
  • Select Restore default visuals.
  • Choose the Multi-row Card visual from the Visualizations pane.

Note: Microsoft recommends using the Card visual for new reports because it supports both single-value and multi-value layouts with enhanced formatting capabilities. However, the classic Multi-row Card visual remains available for compatibility with existing reports and can be restored using Restore default visuals.

Step 3

Select the Multi-row Card visual from the Visualizations pane and drag one or more fields into the Fields well. Each field is displayed as a separate row within the visual.

In this example, the Number of Medals, Region, and Sport fields are added to the visual to display multiple values in a compact layout.

Step 4

Customizing the appearance
You can customize the appearance of the Multi-row Card visual using the Format visual pane. Select the visual, then click the Format visual (paint roller) icon to access the available formatting options.

Callout

The Callout section controls the appearance of the main value displayed for each field in the Multi-row Card visual. You can customize options such as the font size, font color, display units, decimal places, text styling, and alignment to make the key values more prominent and easier to read.

Category Labels

The Category labels section controls the text displayed below each callout value. You can show or hide category labels and customize their font, size, color, and formatting to improve readability and match your report's design.

Cards

The Cards section allows you to customize the appearance of each card within the visual. Depending on your Power BI Desktop version, you can configure options such as card spacing, borders, background, padding, rounded corners, and other card-level formatting settings to create a clean and consistent layout.

Step 5 Save the visual

Your Multi-row Card visual is now ready. Save the Power BI report to preserve the visual and its formatting.

When to use Multirow card visual?

Use a Multi-row Card visual when you want to display multiple key metrics together in a compact and easy-to-read layout. It is particularly useful for dashboards and summary reports where users need to view several related values at a glance.

Pros
  • Displays multiple key metrics in a compact layout.
  • Easy to read and understand.
  • Reduces report clutter compared to multiple individual cards.
  • Suitable for dashboards and executive summaries.

Cons
  • Limited customization compared to the modern Card visual.
  • Fewer formatting options than other visuals.
  • Microsoft recommends using the modern Card visual for new reports.

Conclusion

The Multi-row Card visual provides a simple way to display multiple key metrics in a compact layout. Although Microsoft recommends using the modern Card visual for new reports, the classic Multi-row Card visual remains available and continues to be useful for existing reports and scenarios where a compact multi-value display is required.
